Life on the Alp

Try your hand at making cheese and butter, and help with milking the goats on the Baumgarten Alp.

What’s life like on an ‘Alp’ farm? This day spent on the Alp provides a totally authentic and unforgettable insight into the everyday life in and around the Alp.

Our meeting point is the hotel Kemmeriboden-Bad. From here we enjoy a leisurely walk up to the Alp where a warm welcome from the farming family and refreshments at the «Brunnentrog» await.

Next, it’s already time to get to work; the Älpler adds special ingredients to the thick milk and will require your technical assistance for stirring and turning-out the raw product. The farmer describes the process from this raw state to the finished product and together you can visit the storage place where the cheese will rest and begin to mature. Butter can be made from the fresh cream and you can even make your own beautiful ‘ankenmödeli’ butter forms.

There will also be an opportunity to milk the goats, and after all the morning’s hard work, it’s time for a break. Enjoy a hearty ‘Zmittag’ lunch either in the cosy ‘Stube’ or, weather permitting, outdoors in the fresh alpine air.

Time spent at the alp hut gives participants a comprehensive insight into the daily life and work on a traditional «Alp» farm.

The return trip to the Hotel Kemmeriboden is on foot. If desired, the hike can also follow an alternative.
